What do we do?

Our goal is to deliver economic, societal, scientific and international benefits to the UK and its people – and more broadly to the world.

We do this by:

  • supporting university research: STFC supports university-based research, innovation and skills development in astronomy, particle physics, nuclear physics, and space science;
  • developing world-class scientific facilities: we provide scientists with access to large-scale facilities across a range of physical and life sciences, enabling research, innovation and skills training in these areas;
  • promoting academic and industrial collaboration: we work with partners to build National Science and Innovation Campuses which promote academic and industrial collaboration: taking our research to market through direct interaction with industry; and
  • inspiring the scientists of tomorrow: a huge 90% of physics undergraduates say that our science attracted them to study physics. With our public engagement programme, we are committed to equipping the next generation of scientists with the skills and enthusiasm they need to ensure the UK remains a world leader in science, engineering, mathematics and technology.

The Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) at Harwell

One of our five UK sites, RAL is based at the Harwell campus and supports more than 10,000 scientists and engineers. It provides a thriving and collaborative environment for research in:

  • particle physics;
  • space science;
  • materials;
  • astronomy;
  • photon science;
  • computational and e-science;
  • biology;
  • biomedicine; and
  • chemistry.

RAL and the wider Harwell Campus host some of the UK’s major scientific facilities including:

  • Central Laser Facility (CLF)
  • ISIS
  • RAL Space
  • The Diamond Light Source Ltd
  • The Satellite Applications Catapult
